Valley View Library Walk
Description
Students at Valley View Elementary School (Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade) chose an environmentally based book celebrating Campbell County’s natural beauty and Valley View Elementary’s decades long leadership in environmentalism. Furthermore, this project promotes literacy and supporting public libraries.
After each grade level chose their book, information about the book was turned into a Trail Sign and placed on the Valley View Nature Trail at the school. Each sign lists the class which chose the book, a passage/image, and a QR Code to download the book through the Libby app or borrow at one of Campbell County’s four local libraries (also available at the Valley View Elementary library for students).
Campbell Culture Coalition staff worked with Valley View Elementary staff to read several books to each grade level and the students picked their own book!
The Selected Books are:
Pre-K – “Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you See?” By Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle
K – “The Leaf Thief” By Alice Hemming
1st Grade – “The Ten Good Things About Barney” By Judith Viorst
2nd Grade – “Stellaluna” By Janell Cannon
3rd Grade – “Owl Moon” By Janet Yolen
4th Grade – “Brother Eagle, Sister Sky” By Susan Jeffers
5th Grade – “Henry’s Freedom Box” By Ellen Levine
School staff and organizers selected three additional books, and all the books have a nature or environmental theme. The books selected by staff are: “When I was Young in the Mountains” By Cynthia Ryiant/ “Papi’s Gift” By Karen Stanton/ “Mountain Chef: How One Man Lost…” By Annette Bay Pimentel.
Copies of each book have been donated by the Campbell Culture Coalition to the Valley View Elementary Library and all four of the Campbell County Libraries
